Technology Troubles
Social media is using deception and algorithms to drive us apart. Bots and trolls manipulate users. AI poses new challenges to our safety, workforce, and youth. People matter more than technology company’s profits.
The Issue
Here is what is actually going on in plain language.
Every day, social media exposes us to political messaging that is specifically engineered to divide us. Bots, trolls, secretly sponsored content, and algorithms fuel outrage and contribute to the spread of misinformation and disinformation. They fabricate an endless cycle of anger and hostility that only worsens the already growing divide between Americans. Instead of bringing people together, technology has morphed into a destructive tool used by special interests, politicians and powerful technology companies to drive us apart.
Where We Stand
We are not here to hedge. Here is our position, and why we hold it.
At RDM, we believe technology companies should be held accountable when the manipulation and division they encourage and profit from cause harm. Social media companies must be transparent about political advertising, take meaningful action to remove fake activity, and redesign algorithms, so they no longer exploit users or reward divisive content. This is not about curtailing free speech but requiring transparency and guarding against sophisticated manipulation.
The Solutions
What we would actually do about it.
Transparency. RDM supports transparency across the board. This includes legislation that will require influencers to disclose when they are being paid to offer political commentary or support candidates, require disclosure regarding algorithms, and shine a brighter light on how personal data is collected and used.
Safe Algorithms. RDM supports legislation that will regulate the way social media use algorithms and other addictive features to manipulate users to boost profits.
Unmasking Sock Puppets and Trolls. We support regulations that prevent fake online activity and disingenuous behavior online by using identity verification.
