The Issue
Politicians and high rollers have been eroding our democratic process far too long. The results have been devastating, polarizing, and have eroded confidence in our democracy. Gerrymandering, dark money, and over-the-top political spending have not only muted our voices but driven a wedge right through our electorate. Do not count on the Supreme Court to intervene, because that is highly unlikely.
Where We Stand
RDM believes that we must unite as a nation, and that will require swift changes to a broken electoral system. Politicians should not choose their voters through rampant gerrymandering, closed primaries should no longer result in candidates with extreme views being our only choices, and light must be shed on dark money. We stand for politicians interested in giving Americans a real choice at the ballot box, not diminishing their votes and hiding who is behind misleading and ruthless advertising.
The Solutions
RDM believes the following solutions should have broad bipartisan support and should be enacted immediately.
End Gerrymandering. Politicians should not manipulate electoral maps to protect incumbents. Congress should enact legislation that ends cracking, packing and other forms of gerrymandering, so states stop trying to out-gerrymander each other.
Shine a Light on Dark Money. Want to know who is funding those nasty and manipulative campaign advertisements before every election? We do too. Transparency is necessary, and Super PACs, which are far from super, should have to disclose their donors.
Corporations Are Not People. Corporations should no longer be able to contribute infinite sums of money to political parties and indirectly bankroll campaigns. Every tool should be used to put an end to large corporate interests controlling the narratives around elections.
Open Primaries. Closed primaries result in the most divisive and ideological candidates being nominated for the general election on both sides of the aisle. The middle will not be able to gain traction and elect dynamic candidates who believe in moving our nation forward together if people must declare their party allegiance before stepping into a primary voting booth.
