Empowering the Middle

Money In Politics

Large donors, and corporate and special interests, should not dominate politics because they can give huge sums of money to candidates and political parties with no transparency. Dark money is as ominous for our political system as it sounds. We need real campaign finance reform.

The Issue

Here is what is actually going on, in plain language.

States have empowered corporations to have the same free speech rights as people. Supreme Court decisions have paved the way for wealthy donors, unions and large corporations to impact elections without transparency. Too often those over-the-top, negative political advertisements are paid for by dark money contributions.

The result is candidates that cater to the interests of the wealthy and corporations rather than the everyday citizen. This prevents common sense policies that the people of America support from becoming law. The immense amount of money being funneled into politics also undermines the confident Americans have in our policymakers and political system.

Where We Stand

We are not here to hedge. Here is our position, and why we hold it.

We need policies that require transparency about dark money. The American people deserve to know who is paying for the ads on their screens and bankrolling the candidates on their ballots.

The Solutions

Corporations are state law creations and only have the rights conferred on them by state law. We support a comprehensive campaign to prompt states to curtail political spending by corporations.

We support legislation to increase transparency about political spending, including by requiring full and accurate disclosure so the public knows who is behind a political advertisements.
